retiring nhl king following 1993–94 season, hardy turned coaching in 1999, serving assistant coach los angeles kings , chicago blackhawks until 2010.
an accomplished coach in elevating overall team play, hardy s penalty killing unit ranked third in nhl ’01-02 season 86.6% success rate, second best in kings history. served critical role in developing kings drew doughty during 2008 rookie season.
hardy strengthened blackhawks defensive play lowering goals against average 3.40 during ’05-’06 season 2.82 during ‘07-’08. played integral role in developing two-time stanley cup winners brent seabrook , duncan keith, two-time all-star , norris trophy recipient.
he returned kings organization in 2011 assistant coach club s minor league team, ontario reign of echl hardy led team second round of playoffs first time in club history during 2012-2013 season. hardy specialized in working defensemen , penalty-killing units helping ontario reduce goals against each year, culminating in club-best 191 goals against in 2013-14, , third consecutive pacific division championship since joined organization.
hardy resigned kings organization in june 2010 after being charged fourth-degree sexual abuse. hardy had been arrested in may 2010 after family member had filed complaint alleging hardy had make inappropriate sexual contact after returned hotel bar. prosecution decided not go forward , charge dropped.
hardy accepted position assistant coach chicago wolves of american hockey league (ahl), minor league team st. louis blues in august 2014.
in june 2016, hired assistant coach of tucson roadrunners.
