the hospital of st john built hospital-cum-chapel between 1154 , 1179 prior lawrence of benedictine monastery knights hospitallers, known knights of saint john of jerusalem. many town hospitals in country dedicated st. john baptist, objects of hospital provide small permanent staff supervise house , maintain chapel services, afford temporary relief , lodgement poor wayfarers, , give more permanent relief of local poor sick or aged .
tudor period
during dissolution of monasteries around 1544 closed down , sold john hales king henry viii setting condition hales started free school in coventry. did , few years later moved school, named after king, former carmelite monastery hospital.
in 1565, queen elizabeth visited coventry entering via bishop street gate, , passed school mentioned father had caused foundation. visited , gave donation upkeep.
georgian period
when street outside of old grammar school widened in 1794, half-timbered part of building demolished , street renamed hales street. same year, west end of church , bell tower demolished.
victorian era onwards
the king henry viii school moved present location in warwick road in 1885.
after standing empty on 20 years, announced in 2012 plans afoot open old grammar school offshoot of coventry transport museum. in march 2013 planning permission granted enable restoration of old grammar school used exhibit, education , event space. included demolition of existing adjoining building construction of replacement extension provide disabled access old grammar school. restoration formed part of £8.5 million redevelopment of coventry transport museum , began on 31 march 2014 old grammar school opening public on 4 july 2015.
