in 1628 english benedictine monks in exile approached bursfelde congregation request premises , in 1630 granted derelict buildings @ lamspringe, although unable take possession , begin work on monastery until 1640s, after end of thirty years war. english benedictines rebuilt abbey, dedicated st adrian of corinth, 3rd-century martyr, , st denis, , 1671 ran school here english catholic boys, yorkshire , north, became centre catholic education for, , influence on, great britain.


unlike other english monasteries in exile, lamspringe large abbey rather small priory, , wealthy, wide estates, , community s wealth , status reflected in quality of building works undertaken. abbey church, serious work on began in 1691 under abbot maurus corker, , remaining monastery buildings, executed in rather grand style abbot joseph rokeby 1731, still remain virtually intact.


lamspringe abbey housed relics of st oliver plunkett, taken there in 1684 later abbot of lamspringe, corker, had been him in prison in london, head of st thomas of hereford.


the abbey secularised in 1803 kingdom of prussia, , monks returned england. library dispersed; had contained famous item st. albans psalter.


the school transferred newly established ampleforth abbey , formed basis of present ampleforth college.


the monks, after period of dispersal, reformed community @ broadway in worcestershire between 1828 , 1841, after spread among other houses, although community never formally disbanded. last surviving members joined abbey @ fort augustus (1876-1998) @ foundation.
