while pitching @ santa ana college in santa ana, california, ownbey drew attention of pittsburgh pirates, drafted him in fourth round of 1979 major league baseball draft. however, did not sign. year later, mets drafted him in thirteenth round. in first season of professional ball, ownbey 9–1 1.80 earned run average lynchburg mets , jackson mets.
ownbey made major league debut on august 17, 1982 @ riverfront stadium starting pitcher against cincinnati reds. gave 5 runs in 5 innings pitched , took loss. ownbey combined 2–5 on 2 seasons mets before being traded neil allen st. louis cardinals keith hernandez on june 15, 1983.
