mackay radio tower
the mackay radio tower last of 2 towers (originally 300 feet (91 m) high , 1,000 feet (300 m) apart) used transmit international point-to-point radio communications starting in 1927. @ height of world war ii tower used responding upwards of ten sos calls day ships @ sea. tower had on site 24 hours day, actual transmissions keyed southampton. towers toppled during great 1938 hurricane.
at 12:35 pm. on january 28, 1961, american airlines boeing 707 flight 1502 (flagship oklahoma) engine on fire nosedived on towers before crashing 300 yards (270 m) off napeague coast, killing 6 aboard. plane had been on training flight idlewild airport. repeated story says plane clipped 1 of towers, new york times account of crash says missed towers.
the mackay towers decommissioned in 1984, , underlying land part of napeague state park. 1 of towers torn down. remaining tower used communication purposes new york state police. flashing white lights visible throughout coastal areas of east hampton.
the art barge
the art barge home of victor d amico institute of art. victor d amico director of education museum of modern art 1937 until 1970. in 1955 department had begun art classes @ ashawagh hall in springs, new york. d amico, looking permanent home, worked local baymen dock barge @ current location northeast of mackay towers. called kearsarge, native american word meaning place of heaven . however, popular name of art barge stuck. second story added later. barge operates june through september.
smith meal fish factory
the smith meal fish factory in promised land plant processed menhaden fish fish meal. owned otis smith , produced 20–30 million fish year june october , had own flag stop on long island rail road employees only. after drop in supply of menhaden, smith closed plant in 1969 along plants @ lewes, delaware, , crab island, new jersey. plants consolidated @ port monmouth, new jersey. next smith meal plant private marine finfish hatchery, multi aquaculture systems, founded in 1976 dr. robert j. valenti, , small restaurant, sea slug lounge.
the closed smith meal fish factory sold nature conservancy, transferred state parks commission. napeague state park subject of ongoing court battle whether should used dock cross sound ferry car ferry service new london, connecticut. park has been undeveloped since transfer in 1986 , home nesting colony of piping plover dictate future use.
