it surrounded grassland north, , mixed woodland (largely mature sycamore trees) south. there 19th century exotic trees near palace while golf course , belt of protective woodland make north eastern , north sections of park. notable man-made features of estate include following:



a walled garden @ north end, garden house (hb 15/18/14), not cultivated @ present;
a 19th century glasshouse (hb 15/18/20) , ice house west of palace , there ice house near main entrance (hb 15/18/15 & 19).
the stables , coach yard (hb 15/18/18), serve visitor’s centre;
one of 3 entrance gates remain, whilst 18th century gate lodge has been demolished; and
ruins of franciscan friary, (smr arm 12:16); and
a holy dedicated saint brigid (smr arm 12:17).

rokeby obelisk

atop high-point of palace grounds, knox’s hill, stands rokeby obelisk erected in 1782-83, @ southern end of park. feature constructed @ instigation of archbishop robinson @ time of severe distress in armagh city, employment afforded not find elsewhere. obelisk’s name comes rokeby hall, country seat of robinson’s father, sir thomas robinson, in north riding of yorkshire , subject of sir walter scott’s epic poem rokeby (robinson become baron rokeby in 1770).


it dedicated robinson hugh percy, 1st duke of northumberland, , lord lieutenant of ireland 1763–1765 northumberland had been instrumental in securing archbishopric of armagh robinson, prior had been bishop of kildare. both northumberland family’s , royal coat of arms adorn pedestal, whilst armorial bearings associated robinson detailed on shaft, motto, non nobis solum sed toti mundo nati.


standing 113 feet tall, rokeby obelisk has been awarded “grade b” listed status designation hb15/18/021.

also on grounds, adjacent palace, primatial chapel, built robinson. in style of classic iconic temple, interior described 1 of beautiful irish ecclesiastical interiors, boasting coffered, barrel-vaulted ceiling; delicate frieze; corinthian pilasters; gallery; magnificent panelling; , pews.
