chin born in hong kong in 1961. received bachelor of arts degree in english @ chinese university of hong kong in 1986. later studied in germany, obtaining doctorate in ethnology university of göttingen in 1995. returned hong kong , worked @ policy research institute between 1995 , 1996 , senior advisor hksar government on cultural, arts, , civic affairs 1997 , worked research director in home affairs bureau until 2007.


he became 1 of leading critical intellectual voices against destruction of local communities , historical edifices amidst craze of urban redevelopment. using pen name chin wan, wrote many newspaper columns , supported young radicals became increasingly militant in opposing hong kong , chinese real estate tycoons , beijing s intervention in hong kong. in 2009, hired assistant professor @ department of chinese of lingnan university. held teaching post until mid-2016 when contract not renewed, allegedly due localist views.

in 2011, chin published book on hong kong city-state. book analysed beijing s neo-imperialist stance on hong kong. responding it, chin rooted in hong kong perspective, reflects rising tide of hong kong localist ideology , actions. chin emphasised significance of hong kong autonomy sake of hong kongers. book triggered fierce public debate , popular among young generation. selected 1 of best books of year in 2011 hong kong book prize organised radio television hong kong, , has been on best-seller list of major bookstore chains ever since publication in late 2011.


chin argued democratic china hurt hong kong more populism reign in democratic chinese legislature, dissolving 1 country, 2 systems commitment , hong kong s valuable resources become fair game voracious china. hongkongers need not democratic china, build hong kong autonomous city-state first, merging british culture restored chinese culture, wrote chin. suggested hongkongers should push chinese confederation consisting of separate , parallel states in china, taiwan, hong kong , macau. criticised candle vigil 1989 tiananmen square protests organised hong kong alliance in support of patriotic democratic movements in china in 2013 chinese patriotic sentiment in slogan.


chin advocates hong kong first , hong kong-china separation positions , stressed influx of mainland tourists , immigrants largest threat established institutions , social customs of hong kong , part of scheme of beijing s colonisation. called actions radical activists against tourists , advocated violent actions means defending hong kong s autonomy. chin s opinions triggered huge arguments within pro-democracy activists , condemned xenophobic , nativist mainstream activists , government.


chin known inflammatory remarks on facebook , enjoys growing, loyal following on internet. became advisor of autonomy organisation. more radical elements took idea further, expressing yearning bygone days of british rule, waving colonial flags, , advocated hong kong independence, chin himself draws line.


during 2014 hong kong protests, chin called militant actions in contrast non-violent movement advocated mainstream organisers, occupy central love , peace, hong kong federation of students , scholarism. later on asked report police in suspect of inciting , organising unauthorised assembly.


2016 legco bid

he joined electoral alliance civic passion led wong yeung-tat , incumbent legislator wong yuk-man contest in 2016 legislative council election after localist activist edward leung of hong kong indigenous received better-than-expected result in 2016 new territories east by-election in leung grabbed more 66,000 votes. chin contested in new territories east slogan of creating de facto referendum in 5 constituencies; allow citizens participate in creation of constitution . chin s list received 23,635 votes, 4 percent of total votes, ranking 13th place , not elected.
