he arrived madras in 1864 @ age of twenty-four, missionary of free church of scotland in madras city @ time of arrival. initially, missionary, engaged in outdoor preaching, congregational work, medical aid, , education of boys , girls.


madras christian college received vitality arrival of miller in 1862, , became greatest architect of college. in 1863, envisioned christian education train greatest leaders of india, began specialise on institution later became madras christian college—a christian school[general assembly school] founded on 3 april 1837 john anderson, scottish missionary , founder of mission of free church of scotland @ madras, later became known madras christian college grew school college , campus under leadership of william miller. after took on college succeeding anderson, within 2 years of arrival, upgraded school college , reoriented educational policy of institution. first college class formed in 1864, studying first examination in arts(fa) of university. 1865, first class of 6 students appeared matriculation examination. and, 1867, new class opened prepare ba courses. miller procured support of leading missions, including anglican, wesleyan, , presbyterian bodies turned small sectarian institution mammoth , central christian college south india, , in front rank of institutions in india. miller transformed institution ecumenical , co-operative enterprise , named madras christian college on 1 january 1877.


he not erected great buildings college, chiefly own gifts , of brother. garnered support , sponsorship group of loyal , able men, both indian , british. dormitories, or college hostels first of kind in south india—he used these train future government officials , members of municipal , local boards in art of conducting public business , running democracy. alumni of college, occupied prominent positions in fields, including national movements, politics , government offices.

he served active principal of madras christian college 45 years, 16 years honorary principal, , helped government shape educational policy educator in on india. worked educator in india until 1896, , served leading member of madras university syndicate. educational work, won appreciation , financial aid government.


he nominated madras legislative council (1891–1909) consecutively 4 times in 1893, 1895, 1899, , 1902. in 1896, unanimously chosen moderator of general assembly of free church of scotland, highest honour accorded in church. received kaiser-i-hind medal , several honorary degrees conferred universities of aberdeen , edinburgh.


he appointed vice-chancellor of university of madras in 1901. in 1907, due ill-health, left india reside in edinburgh, scotland, , died in 1923 @ age of eighty-five.
