Suffrage Women in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom
in 1867, john stuart mill first member of parliament raise issue of women s suffrage in house of commons. following attempts made widen franchise in every parliament.
women gained right vote passing of representation of people act 1918 after world war i. gave vote women on age of 30. however, speakers conference charged looking giving women vote did not have terms of reference, consideration women standing candidates parliament. however, sir herbert samuel, former liberal home secretary, moved separate motion on 23 october 1918 allow women eligible members of parliament. vote passed 274 25 , government rushed through bill make law in time 1918 general election. bill did not specify age restriction, unlike voting bill. later led number of incidents of women under age of 30, not allowed vote, standing parliament, notably 27-year-old liberal ursula williams standing in 1923.
