on june 29, 1943 archduke karl pius of austria, prince of tuscany issued manifesto in claimed legitimate successor spanish throne. @ time, had 3 older brothers still living, none of these had shown interest in claiming throne himself. in 1947 karl s older brothers leopold , franz josef formally renounced rights in new york. in 1948 other brother anton verbally renounced rights in barcelona. (both anton , franz josef take claim after karl died, , anton s son dominic current claimant.)


karl recognised supporters carlos viii; movement therefore called carloctavismo or octavismo. used title duke of madrid grandfather had done. karl received support of of conservative carlist leaders. received level of support of general franco s officials in movimiento nacional; followers of carlist regent prince xavier of bourbon-parma claimed francoist support merely attempt divide carlists. karl moved andorra , returned barcelona. between 1944 , 1951 gave out fourteen titles of nobility; named members order of proscribed legitimacy , order of santa maria of lily of navarre. established new order of merit named in honour of saint charles borromeo. in 1952 awarded collar of order general franco , grand cross of order cardinal federico tedeschini, papal legate international eucharistic congress in barcelona.
