auchinairn village developed 2 distinct areas: old auchinairn (the auld toon) , new auchinairn. old auchinairn lay north side of auchinairn road, between woodhill road , letham drive. had school built 1760.
new auchinairn lay approximately between montrose terrace , springfield avenue. had primary school opened in 1876 , auchinairn community centre. current primary school building stands on auchinairn united football field.
the village founded weavers , has housed workers many different industries around area, such mines, railway , quarry.
in 1836 auchinairn village’s population stood @ 284 compared neighbouring bishopbriggs population stood @ 175, opening of edinburgh , glasgow railway in 1842 brought new industries area , result of this, housing required workers. many years auchinairn vibrant community co-operative, post office, several small shops, public house, community hall , mission hall. free church mission met in hall granted full church status in 1865. members built church on springfield road, bishopbriggs. part of springfield cambridge church.
auchinairn had brass band , football team. quoits popular activity. littlehill golf course designed james braid , opened in 1923. harry varden played there in 1925. club professional, tom wilson, once overnight leader in british open.
although viewed today part of town of bishopbriggs, auchinairn still has strong sense of community , own identity. there 5 villages: auchinairn; bishopbriggs; cadder; jellyhill; , mavis valley. separated 1 farmland. post second world war housing development resulted farmland being built on. in 1964 district granted burgh status, , name ‘bishopbriggs’ adopted.
