route description

most of ny 96 s 126 miles (203 km) maintained new york state department of transportation (nysdot); however, 3 sections of route in tompkins county , monroe county maintained local highway departments. in tompkins county city of ithaca, ny 96 city-maintained southern city line start of fulton/meadow street one-way couplet, @ point maintenance of highway reverts nysdot. route maintained ithaca park road western city limits. last locally owned section in monroe county city of rochester, entirety of ny 96 within city city-maintained.

tioga county

though unsigned @ point, ny 96 begins @ eastbound onramp ny 17 @ exit 64 on southside drive across susquehanna river tioga county village of owego. route remains unsigned until intersection of court street , southside drive, western terminus of ny 434. ny 434 continues east along southside drive while ny 96, signed, turns north onto court street , crosses susquehanna river. on opposite side of river, ny 96 intersects front street. configuration of ny 96 between front street , east main street unorthodox in ny 96 splits @ front street follow one-way couplet around tioga county courthouse main street, both streets terminate. ny 96 turns onto main street half block north avenue, resumes northward path. route shares parallel one-way streets ny 17c, enters owego west via main street , leaves via front street east.

now on north avenue, ny 96 passes through heart of owego before leaving village , following owego creek long stretch of rural country. on 1 mile (1.6 km) north of owego village in town of owego, ny 96 meets southern terminus of ny 38. @ point, ny 38 becomes creekside highway while ny 96 passes on owego creek , follows catatonk creek northwest town of candor. once in candor, route , creek turn northward toward village of candor, ny 96 meets ny 96b, alternate route of ny 96 between candor , city of ithaca. past ny 96b, ny 96 turns west , crosses on catatonk creek exits village. west of candor, ny 96 follows east–west alignment through creek valley village of spencer, route converges ny 34 , heads north valley leading tompkins county.

the 2 routes remain concurrent snake northwest through tompkins county. southwest of city of ithaca in town of ithaca, ny 34 , ny 96 meet ny 13. 3 routes continue northeast through town, intersecting ny 327 , ny 13a before crossing on inlet of cayuga lake , entering city of ithaca on meadow street. here, ny 96b reconnects parent @ junction of clinton , meadow streets. north of point, meadow street splits one-way couplet, fulton street carrying southbound traffic , meadow street handling northbound traffic. ny 79, routed on one-way couplet here, crosses ny 96 @ green , seneca streets, ny 79 eastbound using 1 block of fulton street travel state street green street.

ny 96 proceeds northwest through lightly populated section of seneca county , town of covert village of interlaken, home southern terminus of ny 96a, more westerly alternate route of ny 96 between interlaken , geneva. outside of village, ny 96 continues on northwesterly path 4.5 miles (7.2 km) ovid–romulus town line, turns due west 2 miles (3.2 km) access village of ovid. route bypasses village, ny 96a , ny 414 serving main street instead. 3 routes meet @ junction on northern fringe of community, @ point ny 96a leaves ny 414 , turns west follow town line toward seneca lake while ny 96 joins ny 414 , heads north town of romulus.

ny 96 southbound @ us 20 , ny 5 in waterloo

midway between village of ovid , hamlet of romulus, 2 routes split, allowing ny 414 continue due north seneca falls. ny 96, meanwhile, turns northwest, following eastern edge of seneca army depot of distance romulus hamlet. south of community s center, ny 96 separates depot grounds , continues north through hamlet , town of varick. route uneventfully crosses town, passing open fields on predominantly northward alignment on way fayette town line , junction ny 336, east–west connector between ny 96a , ny 414. ny 96 continues across rural terrain outskirts of village of waterloo, number of homes rises route enters village on fayette street.

in southern half of village, highway follows zig-zag routing leaves fayette street @ river road before returning north @ washington street 1 block east. while on washington street, route passes on cayuga–seneca canal , enters village s center, changing names virginia street in process. not far north, ny 96 heads waterloo s central business district, built around junction of virginia , main (us 20 , ny 5) streets. past routes 5 and 20, ny 96 continues north residential street village line, route turns west slight trend north. @ point, scenery surrounding ny 96 shifts house-lined streets rural countryside once again, appearance follows road northwest through town of waterloo , across county line.

ontario county

approaching ny 14 on ny 96 south

although ny 96 travels in east–west direction throughout ontario county, still signed north–south highway. less 1 mile (1.6 km) county, ny 96 connects ny 14 way of cloverleaf interchange, oddity considering rural location of interchange. west of ny 14, ny 96 begins parallel paths of both new york state thruway (i-90) , canandaigua lake outlet north. highway follows both entities across town of phelps village of same name, ny 96 meets southern terminus of ny 88. west of village, ny 96 intersects northern terminus of ny 488, formerly part of ny 88. west of intersection, northward reverse s-curve draws ny 96 closer thruway , outlet route heads toward village of clifton springs, ny 96 bypasses north.

4 miles (6 km) west in village of manchester, ny 96 crosses on outlet (which follows ny 21 south canandaigua lake point out) , indirectly connects thruway way of junction ny 21 located north of village center , south of ny 21 meets thruway @ exit 43. west of ny 21, ny 96 curves gently south, crossing ontario central railroad before resuming westward alignment near grade crossing. @ point, ny 96 enters town of farmington , begins parallel thruway once more. route passes finger lakes gaming , race track, located between county route 8 (cr 8) , ny 332, prior intersecting ny 332 0.5 miles (0.8 km) west of race track.

from point northwestward rochester, ny 96 passes through substantially more developed areas. first of these nearby village of victor, ny 96 enters way of overpass carrying on ontario central railroad. in village itself, route meets northern terminus of ny 444, travels north–south between victor , bloomfield. west of village in town of victor, ny 96 runs along base of valley separating thruway, intersects eastern terminus of ny 251. route continues on northwesterly track mile (1.6 km) before curving north , widening 2 4 lanes passes under thruway near exit 45. i-490, begins @ thruway exit 45, accessible ny 96 way of exit 29, eastern-most exit on i-490.

the section of ny 96 between exit 29 , ny 250 in perinton serves major commercial strip, anchored presence of eastview mall, 1 of largest malls in rochester area , largest east of city. present along stretch of ny 96 series of plazas, beginning 1 north of i-490 featuring walmart , kohl s. continuing northward, ny 96 runs along eastern edge of eastview mall , passes 2 more plazas, 1 of developed around kmart. highway gradually turns northwest toward county line passes mall, , crosses monroe county @ intersection leading eastview commons, plaza separated mall high-voltage power lines , large ditch.

entering pittsford , approaching ny 31 on ny 96 southbound

roughly quarter of mile (0.4 km) county line, commercial surroundings end ny 96 intersects southern terminus of ny 250 in town of perinton. 0.75 miles (1.21 km) northwest, ny 96 meets i-490 once again, time @ exit 28. west of exit, ny 96 parallels i-490 1.25 miles (2.01 km), serving several office parks , powder mills park before reconnecting freeway @ exit 27, located on southern edge of bushnell s basin, small hamlet located directly on ny 96. north of exit, ny 96 breaks i-490 , parallels erie canal through less developed areas between bushnell s basin , mitchell road in town of pittsford, narrows 2 lanes , becomes east jefferson road.

west of mitchell road, ny 96 takes more southerly alignment canal enters densely populated village of pittsford , meets northern , eastern termini of ny 64 , ny 252, respectively, @ intersection of jefferson road , south main street. ny 64 heads south along south main street , ny 252 continues along jefferson road west while ny 96 turns north, proceeding heart of village along south main street. in village center, ny 96 intersects monroe avenue , state street, carry ny 31 east–west through pittsford. route continues on, becoming north main street crosses erie canal , passes under csx transportation-owned west shore subdivision. north of railroad overpass junction southern terminus of ny 153, direct route between pittsford , nearby east rochester.

the last ny 96 marker heading northbound @ winton road in rochester

past ny 153, ny 96 exits village of pittsford , becomes east avenue, name route retains terminus in downtown rochester. proceeds northward through heavily residential town, passing nazareth college , meeting western terminus of ny 31f (fairport road) @ junction adjacent campus of st. john fisher college. east avenue, , likewise ny 96, takes on northwesterly, four-lane alignment set fairport road , begins parallel routing of i-490 once more both enter town of brighton. not far northwest of town line, ny 96 meets elmwood , linden avenues, latter carrying ny 441. 1 mile (1.6 km) northwest, ny 96 intersects penfield road, pre-expressway alignment of ny 441. 1 block point clover street, carries ny 65 south of east avenue.

at brighton town–rochester city line, ny 96 passes through center of can of worms, complex interchange links i-490 i-590. here, i-590 passes under ny 96 while i-490 flies on ny 96. on other side of interchange in rochester, east avenue becomes commercial strip once again, lesser extent in victor. @ north winton road, ny 96 signed last time way of north 96 reassurance assembly directing traffic stay on east avenue. despite fact, route officially continues northwestward toward downtown rochester.
