on february 16, 2012, 1 of building s construction crane cables snapped while lifting steel, causing steel fall 40 stories building, landing on flat bed truck. no injuries reported. construction on building resumed after accident.

the above-ground portion of building dedicated retail use (which consists of ground floor, 3 floors above ground floor 2 floors below ground), accommodate offices using 2 distinct floor shapes. floors 7 through 46, typical floor space 36,350 square feet (3,376 square meters) in shape of parallelogram (which designed echo configuration of site). floors 48 through 63 floor space 28,000 sq ft (2,600 square meters) in shape of trapezoid, shaped opens toward tip of manhattan island , triangulated face 1 world trade center. tower includes 5 levels of mechanical floors. new york power authority selected utc power provide 12 purecell model 400 fuel cells used provide electricity, water , heat. according developer, systems combined rank 1 of largest installations of fuel cells in world. upper floors of building have no interior columns.
the port authority of new york , new jersey (panynj) plans lease approximately 600,766 square feet (55,813.0 m) in 4 world trade center new headquarters. panynj formerly headquartered in 1 world trade center before destroyed. port authority signed 30-year lease. lower levels of building used retail businesses, including eataly, , connects via underground retail , transportation concourse path station. city of new york plans lease 581,642 square feet (54,036.3 m) of space, not in use yet, in completed building. february 2017 announcement spotify lease floors 62 through 72 united states headquarters brought 4 world trade center full occupancy.
