posterior layer
medially, posterior layer attaches tips of lumbar , sacral spines , interspinous ligaments. sides blends middle layer @ lateral border of erector spinae muscle group extends vertebral column (bending spine head moves relative chest), known sacrospinalis in older texts , more extensor spinae, though term not in widespread use. superiorly continues on of thorax attaches vertebral spines , ribs, inferiorly posterior quarter of outer lip of iliac crest.
middle layer
medially, middle layer attaches tips of lumbar transverse processes , transverse ligaments, laterally, blends anterior layer @ lateral border of quadratus lumborum, , superiorly attaches lower border of 12th rib , lumbocostal ligament , inferiorly, attaches posterior part of intermediate area of iliac crest.
anterior layer
medially, anterior layer attaches vertical ridges on anterior surface of lumbar transverse processes, laterally blends middle layer @ lateral border of quadratus lumborum , superiorly, forms lateral arcuate ligament, extending tip of first lumbar transverse process 12th rib , inferiorly, attaches inner lip of iliac crest , iliolumbar ligament.
