in 1904 laotian area of range ceded siam french indochina colony. following franco-thai war in 1941 annexed thailand again under name lan chang (million elephants) province, returned pre-war status in 1946 following 1946 washington accord.


certain hill tribe communities live in range, khmu , hmong, tribal villages located on both sides of mountain range. since mekong isolated sainyabuli other laotian provinces hmong villages, warfare during quiet war badly affected other hmong communities in laos largely did not affect hmong in luang prabang range. hmong villages in sainyabuli province did not see fighting. however, later persecuted same vietnamese , pathet lao soldiers, regarded them traitors, many fled across border. there refugee camps on thai side of range.


the southern part of range saw confrontation between december 1987 , february 1988 when thai , laotian forces engaged in cross-border fighting. known thai–laotian border war, short conflict caused dispute involving map made french surveyors in 1907 mark borders between siam , french indochina. thai-lao joint boundary commission (jbc) established in 1996 clarify 1,810-kilometre boundary , settle ownership of disputed villages. border demarcation still going on.
