archaeologist dorothy garrod discovered gibraltar 2 in 1926.



additional evidence of neanderthal occupation in gibraltar found @ devil s tower mousterian rock shelter, @ north face of rock of gibraltar. devil s tower seventeenth century watchtower located @ eastern end of devil s tower road. archaeological site discovered abbé henri Édouard prosper breuil (1877 – 1961), had recommended investigation. breuil, french paleontologist , archaeologist, renowned expertise on prehistoric cave art.


the excavations @ devil s tower cave started in november 1925 , continued until december 1926 in 3 phases. in 1926, skull of neanderthal child discovered archaeologist dorothy garrod. garrod, had studied breuil in paris, went on perform archaeological excavations in france, palestine, kurdistan, , bulgaria. first female professor @ both university of cambridge , university of oxford. in addition, in 1939, garrod elected disney chair. garrod found 5 skull fragments described archaeologist , others in journal of royal anthropological institute of great britain , ireland in 1928. 5 fragments maxillary, parietal, temporal, cranial, , mandibular. mousterian flake stone tools found near child s remains. skull of female neanderthal child known gibraltar 2 or devil s tower child (pictured above).


in study described in 1993 in journal of human evolution, striation pattern of dental enamel of devil s tower child fossil compared of modern hunter-gatherers , medieval individuals spain. found devil s tower child had more abrasive diet medieval individuals. gibraltar 2 had high number of striations. further, ratio of horizontal vertical striations suggested gibraltar 2 may have been carnivorous. child estimated have been 4 years old @ time of death.


by 2008, face of devil s tower child had been reconstructed (pictured below) @ university of zurich means of computer-assisted paleoanthropology (cap). involved using computed tomography (ct) perform volume data acquisition of 5 skull fragments unearthed garrod in 1926. 5 cranial fragments transformed software form-it virtual 3d images. 5 virtual images suspended in anatomical space according scientific criteria, missing fragments replaced mirror images of excavated fragments. means of laser stereolithography, virtual reconstruction of face , skull of devil s tower child converted physical model. soft tissues approximated using 3d thin plate splining (tps) data modern child. plasticine modelling clay accordingly applied on physical model simulate soft tissue. final model of gibraltar 2 cast; finishing touches included paint , human hair (link final image below).
