in 1997, scott carpenter space analog station became 1 of 4 existing seafloor habitats operational in world. during summers of 1997 , 1998, 4 of world s operational habitats located within 15 nautical miles (28 km) of each other, , 3 of them within 50 feet (15 m) of 1 in key largo: scott carpenter station, marinelab research station [1] , undersea hotel—the jules undersea lodge [2]. fourth habitat, aquarius (laboratory) habitat located offshore near key largo inside florida keys national marine sanctuary.


mission 1 - 1997

the scott carpenter space analog station’s first mission launched in september 1997. mission included shakedown , full functional test of design , engineering systems. included visit nasa astronaut, dr. bob phillips links schools , classrooms. link schedule included linkage nasa team of investigators in isolation @ johnson space center testing long term, advanced life support systems. on board scott carpenter station, investigators tested space life support systems growth of plants in remote , extreme environments.


mission 2 - 1998

after success of mission one, station outfitted expanded mission during following summer in known nasa challenge mission [3]. challenge mission ran concurrently space shuttle mission sts-95, mission featured veteran astronaut john glenn. @ launch of space shuttle, scott carpenter station mission commander, dennis chamberland , crew embarked unbroken 11-day stay on seafloor same period space shuttle in space. following flight, visitors seafloor station included motion picture director james cameron, conferenced students in pond inlet, nunavut via satellite phone, producer eugene roddenberry ii , mount everest explorer–climber, tom whittaker. in 1997, station logged more 36 days of manned missions on seafloor.
