Death David Walker (abolitionist)
edward g. walker (1830-1901), son of david walker, 1 of first 2 black men elected massachusetts state legislature.
just 5 years after arrived in boston, walker died in summer of 1830. though rumors suggested had been poisoned, historians believe walker died natural death tuberculosis, listed in death record. disease prevalent , walker’s daughter, lydia ann, had died week before walker himself died. walker buried in south boston cemetery blacks. probable grave site remains unmarked.
when walker died, wife unable keep annual payments george parkman purchase of house. subsequently lost home, eventuality walker himself had, in sense, predicted in appeal:
must, really, observe in city, when man of color dies, if owned real estate falls hands of white persons. wife , children of deceased may weep , lament if please, estate kept snug enough of white possessor.
his son edward g. walker (also known edwin g. walker) born after walker s death. in 1866 became first black man elected massachusetts state legislature.
