Significance of results Ventilation/perfusion scan
ventilation-perfusion scintigraphy in woman taking oral contraceptives , valdecoxib pulmonary embolism. (a) after inhalation of 20.1 mci of xenon-133 gas, scintigraphic images obtained in posterior projection, showing uniform ventilation lungs.. (b) after intravenous injection of 4.1 mci of technetium-99m-labeled macroaggregated albumin, scintigraphic images obtained, shown here in posterior projection. , other views showed decreased activity in following regions: apical segment of right upper lobe, anterior segment of right upper lobe, superior segment of right lower lobe, posterior basal segment of right lower lobe, anteromedial basal segment of left lower lobe, , lateral basal segment of left lower lobe.
decreased uptake of inhaled radioisotope may indicate impaired ability breathe, airway obstruction, or possible pneumonia.
decreased circulation of injected maa indicates problem blood flow or within lungs. localized area of decreased uptake, in wedge shaped (or pie shaped) configuration normal ventilation images (mismatched defect) suggests pulmonary embolus or blood clot in lungs, leads reduced perfusion beyond obstruction.
