the parliament of sri lanka established in form of westminster parliamentary system. serjeant-at-arms second important permanent officer in parliament, heads own department, department of serjeant-at-arms. serjeant-at-arms appointed secretary general of parliament , responsible ceremonial occasions master of ceremonies in parliament, preservation of order, custody of mace, security, admission of visitors, allocation of accommodation within house , supervision of galleries. assisting serjeant-at-arms in duties deputy serjeant-at-arms , assistant serjeant-at-arms.

during normal sitting days of house, serjeant-at-arms wears white colour uniform , on ceremonial occasions clad specially designed black colour ceremonial attire. (equivalent rank of major-general)
the first serjeant-at-arms m. ismail mbe appointed in 1947. ronnie abeysinghe longest serving serjeant-at-arms in history of sri lanka. held position 1970 1996. current serjeant-at-arms anil p. samarasekara.
