the distribution of transandinomys extends eastern honduras through nicaragua, costa rica, panama, , colombia south , east southwestern ecuador , northern venezuela, west , north of andes. ranges of 2 species overlap, distinct. t. bolivaris occurs honduras on caribbean side of central america south western colombia , northwestern ecuador, 1800 m (5900 ft) above sea level. t. talamancae, found 1525 m (5000 ft) above sea level, less distributed in central america, not known further north northwestern costa rica, more distributed in south america, occurring far southwestern ecuador , northern venezuela. has been recorded south of venezuelan andes, in narrow strip of forest between llanos , mountains. both species forest rats, whereas t. bolivaris restricted humid forest formations, t. talamancae apparently more tolerant of drier forest, explains wider south american distribution.
both species live on ground, active during night, solitary, , feed on fruits , seeds, may eat herbs , insects. build nests of leaves , branches among vegetation, example in tree hollow, or under rocks. in panama, t. talamancae breeds throughout year , average litter size six. various species of mites, chiggers, fleas, , sucking lice have been recorded parasites on both species.
