leicestershire recorded in domesday book in 4 wapentakes: guthlaxton, framland, goscote , gartree. these later became hundreds, division of goscote west goscote , east goscote, , addition of sparkenhoe hundred. in 1087, first recorded use of name laegrecastrescir.


leicestershire s external boundaries have changed little since domesday survey. measham-donisthorpe exclave of derbyshire has been exchanged netherseal area, , urban expansion of market harborough has caused little bowden, in northamptonshire annexed.


in 1974, local government act 1972 abolished county borough status of leicester city , county status of neighbouring rutland, converting both administrative districts of leicestershire. these actions reversed on 1 april 1997, when rutland , city of leicester became unitary authorities. rutland became distinct ceremonial county once again, although continues policed leicestershire constabulary.
