the first 6 single ended examples delivered in 1955/56 operate on steeply graded adelaide tailem bend line , onwards serviceton. further 31 double ended examples entered service between july 1957 , june 1967 , operated across broad gauge network. double ended locomotives had bulldog nose @ 1 end, , flat end @ other.
all delivered broad gauge bogies , worked across south australian network.
in march 1978, included in transfer of south australian railways australian national. 1982, converted standard gauge using bogies state rail authority 44 class locomotives hauling trains adelaide whyalla , broken hill. on broad gauge, began operating through melbourne in mid 1980s.
in 1986, new computer system required class leaders of former south australian railways renumbered last member of class, 930 becoming 967.
withdrawals commenced in 1986 2 remaining january 1994. 961 included in sale of australian national s freight operations australian southern railroad in november 1997. in may 2001 sold silverton rail 44s1 , in march 2005 passed chicago freight car leasing australia.
