haughton, son of doctor, educated in england before travelling india in 1808 take position in bengal military cadet in service of east india company. became proficient in hindustani , entered fort william college in calcutta further knowledge of oriental languages, winning several prizes. ill-health caused over-exerting himself in study caused him return home in 1815. 2 years later, appointed assistant professor @ east india college, haileybury; held post of professor of sanskrit , bengali 1819 1827, publishing instructional works in bengali. awarded honorary degree of master of arts university of oxford in 1819, elected fellow of royal society (frs) in 1821, , member of other learned institutions in europe , india, including royal asiatic society helped found. in 1833, created knight of royal guelphic order.


he supported various prominent academics when attempted in 1832 elected first boden professor of sanskrit, stood down contest in favour of horace hayman wilson, decision won him acclaim many oxford scholars , graduates. published articles on various topics, including sanskrit prepositions, cause of cholera, , cause , effect seen in hindu , european thought. died of cholera in paris suburb of saint-cloud, had resided towards end of life, on 28 august 1849. left estate 2 daughters.
