early academic career

hall began working in lawrence sandler s laboratory during graduate school in 1967. hall worked sandler on analyzing age-dependent enzyme changes in drosophila, concentration on genetic control of chromosome behavior in meiosis. hershel roman encouraged hall pursue postdoctoral work seymour benzer, pioneer in forward genetics, @ california institute of technology. in interview, hall regarded roman influential figure in career roman fostered camaraderie in laboratory , guided nascent professionals. upon completing doctoral work, hall joined benzer s laboratory in 1971. in benzer s lab, hall worked doug kankel taught hall drosophila neuroanatomy , neurochemistry. although hall , kankel made great progress on 2 projects, hall left benzer s laboratory before publishing results. in hall s third year postdoctoral researcher, roman contacted hall regarding faculty positions roman had advocated hall. hall joined brandeis university assistant professor of biology in 1974. known eccentric lecturing style.

academic adversities

during time working in field of chronobiology, hall faced many challenges when attempting establish findings. specifically, genetic approach biological clocks (see period gene section) not accepted more traditional chronobiologists. when conducting research on particular topic, hall faced skepticism when trying establish importance of sequence of amino acids isolated. while working on project other researcher working on similar project michael young.

hall not faced hurdles when attempting establish own work, found politics of research funding frustrating. in fact these challenges 1 of primary reasons why left field. felt hierarchy , entry expectations of biology preventing researchers pursuing research desire. hall believed focus should on individual s research; funding should not limiting factor on scientist, instead give them flexibility pursue new interests , hypotheses. hall expressed loves research , flies, yet feels bureaucracy involved in process prevented him excelling , making new strides in field.
