on 7 june, lalu prasad yadav announced rjd joining in alliance jdu election. on 13 july, led march demanding central government release findings of socio economic caste census 2011 (secc) on caste, although union minister ram vilas paswan pitched comprehensive classification of caste data of secc 2011 before release, , said lalu, nitish worst impacted caste data if released. bjp leader sushil kumar modi called rectification of errors in cases of 1.46 crore people in india, including 1.75 lakh in bihar, before releasing caste data.


on 3 august, incumbent chief minister nitish kumar declared not stand in election. on 11 august, announced seat-sharing forumula, according jd(u) , rjd contest 100 seats each, while congress contest 40 seats in bihar. ncp pulled out of alliance later. on 23 september, nitish kumar announced list of 242 candidates jdu-rjd-inc alliance. obcs favoured in alliance ticket distribution plan. 10% of tickets allotted women candidate alliance. congress vice-president rahul gandhi assigned task shortlist congress candidates each of 40 assembly constituencies former governor of kerala , nagaland nikhil kumar.


nitish kumar declared chief ministerial candidate mahagathbandhan (grand alliance). kumar started har ghar dastak (door-to-door) campaign on 2 july. there definite political overtures when both lalu prasad yadav , nitish kumar shared stage in public event commemorating former chief minister satyendra narain sinha s birth anniversary witnessed veiled attacks on each other,the last time did in public. prashant kishor key election strategist alliance. janata dal-united started 400 audio-visual vans called jan bhagidari manch raths campaign. kumar launching bihar samman sammelan in various cities, including delhi , mumbai, connect bihari diaspora.


however, grand alliance broke on 26 july 2017 result of resignation nitish kumar , on next day 27 july jd(u) made alliance nda , nitish kumar sworn in chief minister of bihar 6th time , sushil modi sworn in deputy chief minister 3rd time.


national democratic alliance

bhartiya janata party (bjp) used 243 gps-monitored raths (modified boleros) , video vans in election. bjp set monitoring headquarters in patna track movement of gps-equipped vehicles visit 40,000 villages in 243 constituencies. campaign kick-started prime minister narendra modi in muzaffarpur on 25 july, inaugurated permanent campus of iit patna in bihta. bjp election exercise involved 3 lakh volunteers. modi held second election rally in gaya on 9 august , third rally in arrah , saharsa on 18 august. modi announced rs 1.25 lakh crore package bihar. addressed fourth rally in bhagalpur on 1 september. bollywood actor ajay devgan campaigned bjp. modi addressed several rallies after 25 october in several constituencies.


in rally in buxar on 26 october, modi vowed defend reservation of dalits, sts, obcs. said of mahagathbandhanthat trying hatch conspiracy carve out sub-quota on basis of religion supreme court of india has said reservation cannot more 50%. on 27 october, in bettiah, again accused nitish kumar , lalu prasad yadav of diluting share of sc, st , obc. promoted view attempt being made take reservation of dalits , other obcs , give other minorities. union finance minister arun jaitley agreed modi s assertions idea of reservations on basis of religion fraught danger. on 1 november, modi repeated allegations 2 leaders came in july 2005 demand review of policy provide religion-based reservation. video dating 2005 leaked showed lalu asking quota muslims. on 3 july, bjp announced seventh morcha, bjp obc morcha, reportedly in regards election.

on 14 september, nda announced seat distribution: bjp got 160 seats, ljp got 40 seats, rlsp got 23 seats , ham got 20 seats. nda did not announce chief ministerial candidate. bjp announced names of 154 candidates in 3 lists. caste played major role in distributing tickets. bjp accommodated 5 candidates of hindustani awam morcha. later, bjp gave imamganj seat ham majhi contesting , bjp reduced seat tally 159. on 1 october, bjp released manifesto.


socialist secular morcha

on 19 september, leaders of 6 parties—sp, ncp, janadhikar party, samras samaj party (ssp), (national people s party) , samajwadi janata party (sjp) -- announced formation of third front known socialist secular morcha. on 15 october, ncp leader tariq anwar announced party had decided leave third front.


left parties

on 24 july, communist party of india (marxist), communist party of india, communist party of india (marxist-leninist) liberation, india forward bloc, socialist unity centre of india (communist) , revolutionary socialist party decided run in constituencies on join ticket citing call alternative platform. cpi contest 91 seats, while cpi—ml, cpi(m), suci, forward bloc , rsp contest 78, 38, 6, 5 , 3 seats, respectively. cpi released first list of 81 candidates on 16 september 2015.

muslim parties

at least 6 muslim parties contested election. aimim contested 6 seats.


all india majlis-e-ittehadul muslimeen (aimim) leader asaduddin owaisi addressed rally in kishanganj on 16 august. owaisi accused nitish , lalu of keeping seemanchal region (consisting of 24 seats) backward region. aimim contesting on 6 assembly seats in seemanchal region muslim voters play major role. addressed public rally in kishanganj on 4 october in sontha village, part of kochadhaman (vidhan sabha constituency). held further rallies @ many places in kishanganj , purnia.


on 5 october, aimim released first list of 6 candidates election.


bahujan samaj party

in june 2015, bahujan samaj party said contest 243 seats. in july, bsp released first list of 49 candidates, including 5 women candidates, bharat bind, president of bsp bihar unit. national party leader mayawati planned campaign candidates. bsp s first list has 11 other backward class (obcs) , 11 muslims, while field dalits , obcs non-reserved seats. on 6 september, mayawati said of central government being remote-controlled communal , fascist organisation rashtriya swayamsevak sangh (rss).


naseemuddin siddiqui, munquad ali (rajya sabha mp) , ram achal rajbhar appointed form strategy consolidate dalits, backward castes (mbcs) , muslim votes. on 9 september, mayawati questioned announcement of dearness allowance (da) central government before election , again accused rss , affiliated sangh parivar organisations of using 2011 national census fear mongering against muslim population growth sectarian purposes, divert attention such issues alleged failure of central government deliver on promises. added census showed positive signs such sex ratio among muslims 951 females 1,000 males, higher national average , indicated slowing of muslim population growth rate. on 10 september, called deployment of central forces in large numbers on electoral duty assure free , fair election , further asked eci keep watch on possible sectarian ploys bjp.


mayawati officially launched party s campaign on 9 october banka. on 13 october, addressing rally in rohtas , kaimur districts, claimed sp chief mulayam singh yadav , party leadership had surrendered bjp. claimed has fielded candidates after consulting bjp. further called on nda not allow reservation policy obcs , sc/sts fall under rss influence. on 25 october, mayawati while addressing rally in buxar district of bihar said samajwadi party played in hands of bjp due nationalist congress party (ncp) broke away it. alleged bjp working business class , nitish-lalu governments did nothing poor.


minor

expelled rjd mp pappu yadav created jan adhikar party before election , announced fight against laloo-nitish alliance. yogendra yadav has announced swaraj abhiyan may extend support political parties, not clear one.


on 17 september, shiv sena announced contest on 150 seats during election. on 19 september, third front- socialist secular morcha - announced seat distribution: sp got 85 seats, janadhikar party got 64 seats, ncp got 40 seats, ssp got 28 seats, sjp got 23 seats , npp got 3 seats. former u.k. banker akshay verma s sarvajan kalyan loktantrik party contested 90 seats in election.


the aam aadmi party , jvm-p decided not contest election, campaign against nda.
