according mazda, system provided:
superior cornering stability
improved steering responsiveness , precision
high-speed straight-line stability
notable improvement in rapid lane-changing maneuvers
smaller turning radius , tight-space maneuverability @ low vehicle speed range
the system electronically controlled rear rack behind rear wheels. @ low speeds (up 35 km/h), rear wheels move in opposite direction front wheels, aiding parking , u-turns lowering turning circle. above these speeds, rear wheels move in same direction front, meaning control during high-speed maneuvers such lane changes or cornering improved. either way, turning angle of rear wheels slight @ 5°, measurement mazda determined optimally effective , natural human sensitivity.
when engine turned off, rear wheels straighten up. change angle of front wheels when engine restarted. caused 4ws control unit powering down, , fail-safe system overriding rear rack.
if system ever faults, fail-safe, rear wheels lock straight allow vehicle normal 2ws functionality.
