history
establishment , king s manor, 1812–1922
kings manor lawn, york
manor school originated project newly formed york diocesan board of national society education of poor, remit establish schools in each parish educating of labouring classes , render them useful , respected members of society. first building secured merchant taylor s company rent aldwark hall, , on 21 may 200 boys began first day @ newly formed school.
by 21 october, agreement had been reached school use great room in historic king s manor, part of plan open separate girls school in aldwark. 1815 303 boys, 175 girls , 6 trainee teachers attending 2 school sites.
marygate, 1922–1942
after 110 years in king s manor, accommodation condemned, , school moved former premises of york industrial school, aid of £3,800 grant national society. 1932 school enrolled 400 senior boys. in hours of 29 april 1942, luftwaffe bombing raid on york resulted in direct hit on manor school building, headmaster arriving @ 5am find building in ruins .
priory street, 1942–1965
within fortnight, school re-established in 5 rooms, 1 not good, 2 small cloakrooms , share of laboratory , gymnasium – cramped quarters. rooms assigned teach french, english, maths, art, , history 240 pupils attending. remarkably, school remain in these ancient quarters more twenty years, during depth of britain s post-war austerity.
low poppleton lane, 1965–2009
work started in april 1964 on new building, first purpose-built school. overseen ron dean, young architect on first job @ ward, ruddick , ward, construction completed in under 2 years, @ cost of £133,101. first site school have playing fields, , lessons commenced on 1 november 1965. buildings extended time later, include new wing enrolment increased around 650 pupils. in 1985 school became comprehensive, transition present new challenges opportunities improving academic traditions of school.
millfield lane, 2009–
despite 1980s extension, 1965 building – in later years – cramped home pupils , staff. single, narrow corridor on first , second floors of extended wing became heavily congested between classes, , lack of disabled access impossible rectify in existing building. in april 2009, manor school moved new, highly improved site on millfield lane, york. £17.6 million development houses on 3 hundred more pupils old building, , includes facilities such recording studios, industrial kitchens, , central chapel pupils. new building, hive, has been built host creative , media collaborative provision city of york. includes theatre gang plank, ticket desk , refreshments counter.
in 2010 applications advanced manor receive academy status, 1 of 2 schools in city (and 153 nationwide) applied increased independence. has led call in house of commons york outer mp julian sturdy greater budget clarity academies.
