having been educated @ rutgers grammar school (now rutgers preparatory school), demarest graduated high honors rutgers college baccalaureate degree in 1883. 1883 1886, demarest taught @ rutgers preparatory school. in 1888 graduated new brunswick theological seminary, , same year ordained ministry of dutch reformed church, served until 1901 @ time returned seminary, , appointed professor of ecclesiastical history , church government replace retiring professor samuel merrill woodbridge (1819–1905). in 1905, demarest named acting president of college, , elected trustees succeed austin scott president in 1906. during tenure, new jersey college women (now douglass college) established in 1918, through private donors , increased appropriation state of new jersey, new facilities constructed instruction in engineering, chemistry, entomology, , ceramics , dormitories built accommodate increased enrollment. following resignation president in 1924, demarest served ten years president of new brunswick theological seminary , remained active in affairs of university. in 1924, published history of rutgers college. on college avenue section of college s new brunswick campus, dormitory built in honor of demarest. aptly named demarest hall, located across street rutgers student center.
