herne mill 1914 william sidney cooper, in herne bay museum.
the gallery known collection of works local artists including thomas sidney cooper , relatives thomas george cooper , william sidney cooper. contained old masters , european oils 16th century onwards. de zoete collection of english , dutch artists given gerard frederick de zoete (1850-1932) in 1906. museum had van dyck painting of james s daughter , burne-jones wheel of fortune in oils. has collection of engravings , prints of old canterbury, given dr pugin thornton , j. henniker heaton, besides ingram collection of engravings , drawings of india, , godfrey collection of old italian engravings. in gallery s collection paintings norwich school , adrian scott stokes, besides 16th-century portrait of chaucer, 2 jacob epstein portrait busts , 1 henry weekes. 1 of last important acquisitions sir basil dixwell van dyck bought £1 million canterbury on behalf of museum in 2004. during refurbishment, these exhibits either in storage, specialist conservators remedial work, or on short term display @ museum of canterbury until 2012, van dyck seen.

the original collections included english , european ceramics oriental porcelain anglo-saxon grave jewellery kent. had mounted wildlife bequeathed s. r. lushington, , hammond bird collection bequeathed in 1903. large, 18th century chandelier in basement room came cathedral. had geological , natural history collections, , ethnological collection included 3 māori tattooed heads, returned new zealand in 1990s. had 2 fourth or fifth-century runestones sandwich, 1 of had raehaebul engraved on it, possibly headstone; in case these might oldest jutish tombstones yet found. had ancient greek bas relief tablets.

until closed in 2009 refurbishment known buffs gallery, containing archives of buffs (royal east kent regiment). around 1960 collection in west gate towers museum, moved royal museum in 1978. prior refurbishment, beaney included room on regiment s history 16th century 1961, when regiment amalgamated princess of wales s royal regiment.
ownership of buffs collection , archives transferred national army museum in london in 2000. collection stored museum, objects on display @ base in chelsea , in new displays @ beaney itself. collection includes pictures, trophies, mess silver, uniforms, weapons , medals including victoria crosses telling stories of campaigns north africa , burma france , germany,. includes material on east kent s volunteers , militia.
