panton, leslie & company made fortune in indian trade , become largest mercantile company on southern frontier in 1790s. working in partnership alexander mcgillivray, able expand operations east florida , bahamas mississippi river. mcgillivray, influential chief of upper creek (muscogee) towns, intimate associate of panton , considered have been silent partner in firm. panton had promised him one-fifth share of company s profits once obtained spanish approval. mcgillivray, sickly, died in 1793, , buried masonic honors in panton s garden @ pensacola on 18 february of year.


the firm fixed prices undersell competitors in georgia , south carolina, dispatched agents throughout indian country, , carried spanish government communiques among tribes. although panton, leslie & company legitimate trading firm, smuggled goods across border , manipulated market advantage in other ways, practices common trading firm operating on frontier @ time.
