the sculpture display overlooks ludington harbor , shows weathered sea captain steering ship. dedicated ludington native charles f. conrad, founder of lake michigan carferry service contained automobile ferry ss badger. ss badger, along ss spartan , ss city of midland 41 carferries, purchased conrad in 1991 defunct michigan-wisconsin transportation company. converted badger passenger , auto ferry. lake michigan carferry service functioned independent enterprise ten years without government subsidies. s.s. badger has ferried 34,000 vehicles , 115,000 passengers between ludington, michigan, , manitowoc, wisconsin, 1992 2014.
the sculpture created in 2000 , named sailor sculptor kristin kokkin. first sculpture placed @ ludington s waterfront park. honors have sailed on lake michigan.

the new keith wilson children s center addition in 2012 completed installation of bronze sculpture flights of learning @ ludington public library front exterior entrance. john , anita wilson first saw sculpture @ grand rapids art prize competition. decided purchase seven-and-a-half-foot 800-pound sculpture , donate ludington library. unveiled in june 2012. creator , artist bryce pettit of monticello, utah. sculpture took pettit 6 months complete. keith wilson children’s center addition named john’s father. pettit wrote sculpture “flights of learning” represents mission , purpose of library.

the abbie bronze bas-relief sculpture representation of last schooner built in ludington in 1886 merchant rasmus rasmussen. due storm on november 8, 1905 abbie forced ashore , wrecked off portage point near entrance portage lake in manistee county, michigan. abbie double-masted schooner 88 feet long. named after nineteenth-century ludington postmaster s wife. while schooner being built postmaster asked rasmussen if name schooner after wife. in exchange postmaster buy windsock ship. end result schooner named abbie , harry scott, postmaster, furnished windsock.
jack rasmussen , wife shirley donated funds sculpture. jack grandson of rasmus rasmussen. abbie double-masted schooner 88-feet long. rasmus rasmussen sailed schooner between ludington , chicago merchandise. bronze sculpture created artist tyson snow of salem, utah.
