operating systems
sigma 5 , 8 systems lack memory map feature, sigma 5 supported basic control monitor (bcm) , batch processing monitor (bpm). sigma 8 can run real-time batch monitor (rbm) bpm/btm.
the remaining models ran batch processing monitor (bpm), later augmented timesharing option (btm); combined system referred bpm/btm. universal time-sharing system (uts) became available in 1971, supporting enhanced time-sharing facilities. compatible upgrade (or renaming) of uts, control program v (cp-v) became available starting in 1973 , added real-time, remote batch, , transaction processing. dedicated real-time os, control program real-time (cp-r) available sigma 9 systems. xerox operating system (xos), intended ibm dos replacement, runs on sigma 6/7/9 systems, never gained real popularity.
third party operating systems
some third party operating systems available sigma machines. 1 named gem (for generalized environmental monitor), , said rather unix-like . second named janus, michigan state university.
