the village of ocracoke located around small sheltered harbor called silver lake, second smaller residential area built around series of man-made canals called oyster creek. village located @ widest point of island, protected atlantic ocean sand dunes , salt marsh. average height of island less 5 feet above sea level, , many of buildings on island built on pilings lift them off ground. flooding risk during both hurricanes , large storms. ocracoke lighthouse situated near silver lake , has remained in continuous operation since 1823.
