southampton became spa town in 1740, discovery of spring of chalybeate water. area laid out spa gardens , earned royal patronage. further encouraged fashionable society southampton , aided prosperity , development.
southampton had become popular site sea bathing 1760s, despite lack of quality beach. innovative buildings purpose built @ west quay, baths filled , emptied flow of tide, 1 of had adjustable floor. building, known long rooms, had long promenade views on water enjoyed spectators , bathers alike.
polygon
the polygon 18th-century residential , commercial development designed in 1768 james leroux aimed @ southampton s fashionable clientele. intended development of 12 residential houses, hotel, shops, assembly room , ornamental lake. 3 houses , hotel completed 1773, scheme had financial problems , never completed. buildings have since been demolished.
coaching
the fashionable attractions of town caused coaching traffic increase. several coaching inns established in southampton, including dolphin hotel , star hotel, , there great deal of competition passengers , guests. coaching trade continued until rendered obsolete arrival of railway.
canals
there great deal of interest in constructing canals, though partially implemented.
in 1774, canal between eling , salisbury proposed, not built. in 1779, canal linking southampton (at redbridge) andover proposed.
