harold vanderbilt had keen interest in success of vanderbilt university in nashville, tennessee, founded in 1873 through financial sponsorship of great-grandfather. longtime member of university s board of trust, served president between 1955 , 1968. helped guide institution through time in history when racial integration of student body divisive , explosive issue. in 1962, vanderbilt attended 1 of first meetings of vanderbilt sailing club , provided funding club purchase first fleet of dinghies, penguins. university annually offers several scholarships named in honor, , on grounds in front of buttrick hall, statue designed joseph kiselewski erected in honor.


in 1947, vanderbilt invested honorary commander of order of british empire (cbe) king george vi. letters patent conferring honor on him (signed queen mary in capacity grand master of order) , insignia of order on display in trophy room @ marble house summer estate in newport, rhode island.


in 1963, vanderbilt assisted preservation society of newport county in acquiring marble house in newport, rhode island, mother had sold more 30 years earlier. bid successful, , property converted museum has been open public since mid-1960s , holds documents , artifacts related life.
