after discovery of gold in october 1867 james nash in gympie, requirement of railway line linked port became apparent. in 1877, queensland government approved construction of 3 railways connect mining towns principal ports: townsville charters towers; bundaberg mount perry; , maryborough gympie. station buildings @ gympie , maryborough positioned @ terminus of track line, marking railway’s dead end status. line opened on 6 august 1881.

within year of line opening, gympie representatives began lobbying rail link brisbane , on 17 july 1891, gympie brisbane line opened. when original building re-sited end of track southern side of line, allowing line pass through gympie.
