in 1826 young architect john foster jr commissioned design , lay out cemetery along same lines père lachaise cemetery, paris £20,000 raised public subscription.
the oratory
on high ground @ north foster built windowless oratory in style of greek revival architecture accommodate funeral services before burials took place in cemetery.
the building today, infrequently open public, contains number of monumental statues recovered cemetery. bronze sculpture tracey emin stands in front of building , visible through gates.

the garden lodge
to south, foster built monumental arch , porter s lodge out of same stone. after years of being used property of council workmen, refurbished private home in 1997.
the burial grounds
the cemetery closed in 1936 after 57,774 burials , subsequently fell state of disrepair.
the monument above william huskisson buried stands near spring.
a victoria cross holder, sergeant arthur herbert lindsay richardson (1872-1932), buried here.
