the new keith wilson children s center addition in 2012 completed installation of bronze sculpture flights of learning @ ludington public library front exterior entrance. john , anita wilson first saw sculpture @ grand rapids art prize competition. decided purchase seven-and-a-half-foot 800-pound sculpture , donate ludington library. unveiled in june 2012. creator , artist bryce pettit of monticello, utah. sculpture took pettit 6 months complete. keith wilson children’s center addition named john’s father. pettit wrote sculpture “flights of learning” represents mission , purpose of library.


the model bronze sculpture sculptor s eleven-year-old daughter. open bronze book @ statue explains parents have responsibility make world better through children. members of community carry responsibility of giving children proper education become outstanding citizens. book represents portal knowledge. birds represent information can learned in books.


knowledge released , flies new horizons enrich , enlighten lives of people through learning. freedom gained through opportunity of flights of learning . different birds represent different areas of knowledge. knowledge of science , mathematics through wise owl. knowledge of history represented falcon. knowledge of literature shown through jay bird. appreciation of music given meadowlark. fantasy portrayed hummingbird. skills of art illustrated in tern.

this sculpture represents sallie peterson ferguson reading young boy , young girl. raised on fruit farm on meisenheimer road in summit township, mason county, michigan. ferguson ludington high school graduate of class of 1961. valedictorian. ferguson went college , became high school english teacher. 1 of founders of montessori school of kalamazoo.


because of ferguson’s background in teaching dr. bill anderson, chair of mason county cultural economic development task force, proposed idea sculpture placed @ ludington public library. sculpture @ craig r. rasmussen outdoor activity area in rear of library. sculptor created w. stanley proctor, made sculptures hooked on hamlin , follow leader mason county sculpture trail.
