queen sugar, novel written ucla graduate natalie baszile, mother-daughter story of reinvention. tells story african-american woman, unexpectedly inherits sugarcane farm in louisiana.


baszile started writing african-american-themed tale of endurance , hope in american south in 1990s, , text ready ten years later. first presented manuscript publishers in 2009 without success. after revising book 2 years, resubmitted text, 1 agent agreeing represent her.


baszile took part in women writer s retreat in hedgebrook. friend of hers @ retreat, novelist sarah manyika, suggested read part of chapter queen sugar fellow residents. leigh haber, oprah magazine s book editor attending , loved novel , passed people @ harpo because thought might interested in it. few months after that, harpo called wanted option book project.


the book published penguin in 2014 debut novel of baszile , few months later, oprah television network own negotiated deal turn book television series.
