Origins Palestine Liberation Front
the plf founded ahmed jibril , shafiq al-hout in 1961, , enjoyed strong syrian backing. in 1967 plf merged 2 other groups, arab nationalist movement-affiliated heroes of return (abtal al-awda) , young avengers, form popular front liberation of palestine (pflp).
the pflp led former anm-leader george habash, in april 1968 jibril split group form popular front liberation of palestine – general command (pflp-gc), returned pro-syrian position of former plf.
this led reestablishment of plf, organization broke apart after jibril s pflp-gc had followed syria battle against palestine liberation organization (plo) in 1976, during lebanese civil war. open fighting between rival factions ensued, , after mediation yassir arafat did relationship stabilize. on april 24, 1977, pflp-gc deserters formed new plf, under leadership of muhammad zaidan (abu abbas) , tal @ ya qub. sporadic fighting continued between pflp-gc , plf, , included august 1977 bombing of plf headquarters, killed 200 people.
