malignancies of internal organs can reach advanced stage before giving symptoms. stomach cancer, example, can remain asymptomatic while metastasizing. 1 of first visible spots these tumors metastasize left supraclavicular lymph node.
the left supraclavicular node classical virchow s node because on left side of neck lymphatic drainage of of body (from thoracic duct) enters venous circulation via left subclavian vein. metastasis blocks thoracic duct leading regurgitation surrounding nodes (i.e. virchow s node). concept 1 of supraclavicular nodes corresponds end node along thoracic duct , hence enlargement.
differential diagnosis of enlarged virchow s node includes lymphoma, various intra-abdominal malignancies, breast cancer, , infection (e.g. of arm). similarly, enlarged right supraclavicular lymph node tends drain thoracic malignancies such lung , esophageal cancer, hodgkin s lymphoma.
