under rule of islamic theocracy in iran since 1978 revolution, status of science , education has been dramatically affected in country. in particular, following so-called iranian cultural revolution , islamization of universities after shutdown period, quality of science , technology required development dropped has since been revived, so iran ranked 40th in science production , first in scientific growth in world in 2011.

religious
students of minority religions have been barred entering tertiary education institutions in iran, particularly of baha faith. since iranian revolution of 1979 baha students have been excluded universities regardless of national university examination results on basis of religion. see bahá í institute higher education.
gender-based
additionally, in august 2012, 36 universities declared 77 ba , bsc courses in 2012–2012 academic year single gender , exclusive men, limiting options of female undergraduate students.
