under christian iv royal danish navy grew rapidly , there urgent need suitable accommodation personnel , families. bremerholm offered similar housing naval officers, these old houses referred implication in nyboder s name, new barracks house common sailors , other private personnel. new development planned on land outside copenhagen acquired king intention expand fortified city northwards. had still not happened saint anne s post, later develop kastellet, had been constructed little further north.

construction of nyboder commenced in 1631. area laid out around 2 main streets radiating planned square never established. rows oriented perpendicularly these streets.the architects assisting king hans van steenwinckel younger , later leonhard blasius. christian iv s nyboder completed around 1641.

absorption city

in 1647, 1 year before christian iv s death, nyboder definitively absorbed fortified city when eastern city gate moved, yet of surroundings still awaited redevelopment. north of nyboder lay piece of undevelopped land known greenland (danish: grønland).

on 16 december 1658 gunpowder magazine north of nyboder exploded, damaging or demolishing many houses , causing numerous casualties.

in 1668 copenhagen s gallows moved previous location, @ site kongens nytorv laid out few years later, greenland. in 1677, nyboder saw bleak neighbour when stocks house built little south.

guard , jailhouse

from days, nyboder area included guardhouse replaced new building in 1780s. had external bell used gather people in event of military attack or fire. building houses nyboder barracks own guard , contained jail, trouble-making residents deposited.

expansion of nyboder

in 1695 commission considers move part of naval personnel island of møn, due lack of space in crowded city still not allowed develop beyond fortifications never happens. when frederiksholm islet created series of land reclamation, intention use new naval barracks again plans not carried out.

in end decided build new houses @ nyboder , expansion continue next 40 years. in 1756 24 two-storey houses designed philip de lange built , while later extensions directed other architects, continued to initial design. in 1771 of christian iv s original rows extended storey anthon , harsdorff. 1781-96 app. 150 houses built. guard house (1787) , 5 officer s houses added area during same period.

between 1853 , 1878 half of nyboder sold off , demolished.
