a chronological history of lighthouse coast guard:



1847, march: congress appropriated $25,000 light built.
1849, may: construction completed.
1850: lighthouse first lit.
1856: fourth order fresnel lens installed.
1868: keeper s quarters added. keeper no longer had live in cramped space inside tower.
december 8, 1918: fire unknown origin caused $13,500 in damages. engine house , machinery destroyed, tower , oil house damaged , windows, woodwork, gutters , eaves damaged.
december 5, 1979: lighthouse automated. vega lantern replaced fresnel lens.
2010: historically significant structures inc. giving tower climb tours of lighthouse in summer.
