the election resulted in massive loss of support 2 main political parties of spain, fell combined total of 80.9% in previous european election record-low 49.1% of vote (a net total of −31.8 pp, −16.0 each one). podemos, party founded 4 months running on anti-austerity platform, won unprecedented 8.0% of vote , 5 out of 54 seats european parliament; best result ever scored in spain newly created party in first electoral test.
the people s party (pp) came out on top in autonomous communities except in andalusia, asturias , extremadura, psoe won; basque country, pnv prevailed; , catalonia, erc scored first place first time in 80 years. in these last 2 communities pp polled in fourth , fifth places, respectively. significant were, however, results in madrid, valencian community , murcia; in first 2 polled below 30% mark first time in 25 years, while in latter experienced spectacular drop in support, falling 60% mark had maintained since 2000 general election below 40% of vote. also, except autonomous cities of ceuta , melilla, didn t surpass 40% mark in region, not strongholds of galicia (where polled mere 35%), castile , león or castile-la mancha (38% in both of them).
the spanish socialist workers party (psoe), except communities won, experienced significant drop in support. suffered notably in catalonia , basque country (where finished in 3rd place). in catalonia in particular, psoe s sister party, socialists party of catalonia, had won general , european elections held in region–except of 1994 , 2011, polled second behind convergence , union–. until election, worst result of party in region in such elections had been 2011 result of 26.7%; in election fell 14.3%.
other parties benefiting collapse in support pp , psoe parties united left-led plural left (ip) coalition, 10.0% obtained best results nationally since 1996, , union, progress , democracy (upyd), 6.5% remain highest party win in nationwide election before decline throughout 2015. citizens party (c s) entered european parliament 2 seats , 3.2% of vote.
