baudouin born in château du stuyvenberg, near laeken, brussels, in belgium, in 1930, son of prince leopold, duke of brabant, , first wife, astrid of sweden. father became king of belgians, leopold iii, in 1934 , prince baudouin became duke of brabant. baudouin s mother died in 1935 in automobile accident.


part of leopold iii s unpopularity result of second marriage in 1941 mary lilian baels, english-born belgian commoner, later known princess de réthy. more controversial had been leopold s decision surrender nazi germany during second world war, when belgium invaded in 1940; many belgians questioned loyalties, commission of inquiry exonerated him of treason after war. though reinstated in plebiscite, controversy surrounding leopold led abdication.
