the almö bridge collapsed @ 01:30 on 18 january 1980, when bulk carrier ms star clipper struck bridge arch, collapsing main span. roadway landed on top of ship, destroying ship s bridge causing no casualties on ship. loss of ship s bridge made radio communication difficult, swedish pilot had use handheld vhf radio. because of ice ship unable launch boat shore , warn motorists fog descending on area. 8 people died night drove on edge until road on tjörn side closed 40 minutes after accident. mainland side had been closed lorry driver had crept bridge in fog , had grown suspicious when railing disappeared. able stop lorry 1 meter before abyss.
