the station launched in 1990 easy listening format, on years went more towards more adult contemporary format. in 1999, transition complete, , station took on point branding, popular brand radio stations using format. after then-adult contemporary wwjr became active rock station in 2000 under calls whbz, station became market s sole ac station until 2003, when cleveland-based wktt switched country ac wlkn. @ time, station owned mountain dog media. station carried syndicated programming on weekends, including radio-optimized programming vh1 radio network, nina blackwood s absolutely 80 s, , retro pop reunion.


in 2005, mountain dog sold station midwest communications while keeping espn radio affiliate wclb, restricted non-compete agreement until 2010. shortly after, midwest changed tweaked format hot ac , ended syndicated programming on station (except sunday airing of american top 40), , replaced station s airstaff new personalities, including voice tracked personalities other midwest stations in green bay , wausau, though morning show remains locally originated, hosted ben olsen local news updates whbl. in september 2008, station took chr (top 40) format, adding current hip-hop/r&b songs playlist , narrowing down music after 2001, few pre-2001 tracks sprinkled in through playlist. on september 2009, wxer returned hot ac format after one-year run chr (top 40). formerly recorded voicetracked programming airs live facilitate listener requests, though still originates outside of sheboygan.

wxer broadcast studios co-owned wply (1420, wjub) on highway 57 east of city (which remain home of wjub , current sister station wstm-fm), in 1994 after wply sold off, moved them falls plaza, small shopping center off fond du lac avenue in sheboygan falls, shared former sister station wcnz/wclb (950 am). finally, station moved washington avenue facilities of midwest s other stations in sheboygan when bought group in 2005.
