as part of british empire canada @ war in 1914. canada bore brunt of several major battles during stages of war including use of poison gas attacks @ ypres. losses became grave, , government brought in conscription, despite fact against wishes of majority of french canadians. in ensuing conscription crisis of 1917, riots broke out on streets of montreal. in neighboring newfoundland, new dominion suffered devastating loss on july 1, 1916, first day on somme.

the united states stayed apart conflict until 1917, joining entente powers. united states able play crucial role @ paris peace conference of 1919 shaped interwar europe.
